Is it too much to ask?

Is it too much to ask that we, Americans, acknowledge and repent for the crimes against humanity that were directed at Black people since they were kidnapped and brought here centuries ago?

Is it too much to ask for all of us to recognize the mistreatment Black Americans have received and injustice directed towards them for decades, still?

Is it too much to ask that we have empathy and compassion while advocates for equity rally and protest throughout the country, while still disavowing physical retaliation against law enforcement?

Is it too much to ask that individuals working in law enforcement be given training, support, and resources to safely and justly carry out their job?

Is it too much to ask to reform the current criminal justice and law enforcement systems, as it is clearly wreaking havoc on the Black community?

Is it too much to ask that reform be understood as improvement and not as invalidation or disrespect?

Is it too much to ask that advocates for social justice, Black Lives Matter, and police reform also be seen as grateful and respectful of law enforcement? Is it too much to ask to be both?

Is it too much to ask to acknowledge the war against poor Americans and the proliferation of extreme capitalism? That groups of middle to low socioeconomic status Americans are being pit against each other to maintain the status quo in this country, to keep low-consciousness leaders powerful and greedy corporations profitable?

Is that too much to ask? Possibly. But if we don’t ask, will we ever receive?
