My 2020 New Years Resolution

My New Years resolution for 2020 is to stop giving unsolicited advice.

Does anyone else think there is wayyyy too much garbage advice on the internet these days? Is anyone else feeling too susceptible to this garbage advice?

I came to this New Years resolution after realizing:

  1. I’m too susceptible to accepting others’ guidance without filtering it through my own lens
  2. If I’m absorbing bad advice, how are others receiving my advice?

It’s not my responsibility to manage how other people hear my advice and what they do with it, but if I can stop contributing to the advice overload, I will.

This resolution goes hand-in-hand with my mantra and word of the year.

Word: Resourcefulness

Mantra: I have everything I need; how do I use it to create the life I want?

Since sometime around mid-2017, I have been consistently trying to figure out what I want for my life and how to get it. I started with practical resources, like Harvard Business Review’s guide to goal-setting and career coaching with PSU’s Smeal School of Business alumni center. I dove into the opposite side of the spectrum too, straight to the religious / spiritual / downright hippie dippy Law of Attraction type stuff. I hesitate to admit it, but the latter has helped me more.

I had to root through (a lot of) garbage content, but I finally found the resources that are most valuable to me. They’re powerful and moving and provide me so much excitement and optimism. But truthfully, I’m not where I want to be in life. This past year, 2019, was about five motivating steps forward, four heartbreaking steps back. With all this information and these resources at my fingertips, and I’m not asking for much, how haven’t I gotten farther?

I know I’m equipped. I’m prepared. I’m whole and I’m ready.

This is the one step I netted in 2019, lol.

I just need to figure out how to utilize and navigate and manipulate all this information to create the life of my dreams. Totally reasonable to fully achieve in one calendar year, right???

Happy New Year, happy 2020! Hope yours is the best yet.
